"The fourth edition of Doom over Leipzig is just around the corner and comes with an awesome and unexpected line up. Be sure to experience three days full of emotions and a journey through several variations of Doom and Metal. We used to start the festival with a relaxed, calm program on Thursday, f.i. with lectures or a documentary as you certainly remember – that’s simply not possible this year. We keep on celebrating the Doom from the first moment. You are going to see the following bands at this evening: Windhand, a quintet from US that just got honored from CVLT Nation for releasing the best Doom Metal LP in 2013, called “Soma”. Heading from the same village as Windhand we have Inter Arma a grim formation that knows perfectly how to bring Sludge and Black Metal in to an awesome symbiosis. Indian is the thrid in a row. This Chigaco based band is celebrating their 10th anniversary and putting the icing on the the cake by doing an European tour and having a stop at our festival.

We don’t really know where to start when we take a look at the line up of friday evening: First of all there is Circle from Finnland, a seven piece that brings out a combination of folk and ambient sounds out of twenty years of the bands history. In their huge discography list you’ll find an endless amount of studio and live recordings but also two soundtracks. One of them for the Finnish film-director Mika Taanila. As long in the business as the guys and gals in Circle are Sourvein a dirty Southern Sludge group heading from North Carolina, US. Their sound is typical and reminds of bands like Eyehategod. Graves at Sea, one of serveral goldies of the label Gilded Media is standing for the limbo at this evening. Based in Phoenix, Arizona, the band already visited Leipzig in 2013 – so we are more than happy to welcome them back to the right time at the right place. The grand final initiates 40 Watt Sun – we are honored to have this Funeral Doom legends on stage at our festival. Nobody can pass the voice of Patrick Walker without getting a thick lump in it’s throat abruptly. Clenched Doom Metal meets emotional vocals. At the end of Friday evening is no one less than Old Man Gloom – the DIY legends around ex-Isis frontman Aaron Turner. We could continue with the namedropping about this band, but this is not necessary because of Old Man Gloom’s very own, distinctive sound.

After a short break to take a breath, the line up for Saturday is now the turn: First in our introduction is Conan, the trio from Liverpool that is also touring to promote their new album “Blood Eagle” – we are excited! More Funeral Doom brings Esoteric to us. They’re from UK as well and play this monumental and powerful sound since two decades. Kongh actually known as a swedish doom three piece shrunk to a duo initiate the first part of finishing of the evening. Closely followed by The Body from Arkansas which put the final nail in the coffin of humanity in their music. The bearded duo which resides with their experimental Sludge sound on the well known label Thrill Jockey, hopefully ensures that after their show, the last spark of life will is gone from our audience." - MODERN OBSESSION BOOKING

New album of CULTED will be released in January 2014, serving a beautifully haunting and grim piece of sprawling Doom Metal

Blackened doom merchants CULTED have revealed the details behind their upcoming second full-length album and first release in over four years. Oblique To All Paths is a beautifully haunting and grim piece of sprawling doom metal…the perfect soundtrack to a desolate, barren winter. The album will see its official release on CD, 2LP and digital formats via Relapse Records on January 21st in North America, January 20th in the UK/World, and January 17th in Germany/Benelux/Finland.

CULTED’s story is a unique one: Four band members spread out over Sweden and Canada, having never performed music together in the same room as an entire band, instead coming together through the wonders of modern technology to create totally compelling top of the line doom. While CULTED’s writing and recording process may be unusual, and a story unto itself, it certainly should not overshadow what this band has accomplished---creating a bleak and epic masterpiece of dystopian doom. The group formed in 2007 and has released one full-length and one EP including 2009's Below The Thunders of the Upper Deep and 2010's Of Death and Ritual. Headlining Friday nights shows are the enigmatic, Blood-Lusting Cambridge quartet (Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats), known to the festival as The Sharon Tate Experience. To add an extra bit of fun to the proceedings, we will be giving away 100 copies each night of a special split 7" single (exclusive to this event only) with The Sharon Tate Experience and greasy faves Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell. Each band has recorded their own Festive Christmas hit for the occasion and it's guaranteed to be a classic, highly collectable item. We will be giving away 100 red the first night and 100 green the second night in the raffle. They won't be on sale - RAFFLE ONLY, so good luck to all potential winners.

We will also be selling the event-only Purson 7" The Contract/Blueprints of the Dream. 250 copies will be pressed for the occasion and not on sale elsewhere. There will be a specially commissioned Arik Roper screenprinted event poster and t-shirt on sale as well as one or two other goodies.

SPIRIT DESCENT arbeiten an einer sumerischen Doom-Fabel. Neues Konzeptalbum "Anthem" kommt 2014!

Im Hause SPIRIT DESCENT wurde nicht nur das Besetzungsrad weitergedreht. Die norddeutsche Doom Metal-Institution arbeitet akribisch an ihrem dritten Vollzeitalbum, welches die hektische Welt auch anno 2014 das Doomen lehren wird, wie es "Doominion" (2010) und "VII Chapters In A Minor" (2012) zuvor getan haben.

"Anthem" wartet mit elegischen Kompositionen auf, die von Anfang bis Ende vor epischer Erzählkraft und grandioser Riffarbeit nur so strotzen. Zu den Stärken der Lübecker gehören neben der Einprägsamkeit der Melodien die nicht selten an King Diamond erinnernden heavy Vocals von Sänger Jan Eichelbaum. Dafür, dass die Geschwindigkeit auf "Anthem" weiterhin in schwersten Doomgefilden taktiert, hat Mastermind Andreas Libera mit dem neuen Mann am Schlagzeug, Stefan Hoppe, gesorgt.

Jahrtausend v. Chr. erstmals den Schritt zur Hochkultur geleistet hat.

Klanglich erfinden sich SPIRIT DESCENT Gott sei Dank nicht neu, sondern bauen ihre Stärken aus und kombinieren diese mit einer Atmosphäre, die das Thema des Albums perfekt vertont und die eigene Diskografie um ein weiteres musik- und menscheitsgeschichtliches Kapitel erweitert.

N (30) + [ B O L T ] collaboration having their debut album out, a slowly swelling biest of drones and noises!

This album is a joint venture between N and [ B O L T ] . N known for his massive drones, made out of on/off guitar effects and [ B O L T ] famous for their raw doom-drones, played on two bass guitars, crossed their ways while playing and meeting at the same venues across Germany. They decided to meet at a recording studio to play together, just to find out if their sounds would fit together. The results are impressive.

The collaboration N (30) + [ B O L T ] does not just sound like N with [ B O L T ], it is a substantial progress of sounds for both acts. They recorded three tracks that show different aspects of their sounds in a new way. The first track is a slowly swelling biest of drones and noises, the second track is a catchy experimental epos and the last track is a little melancholic surprise.

N (30) + [ B O L T ] was released on black vinyl with very raw & thick cardboard covers in a limited edition of 100 pieces. The album also includes a download code with some great remixes of the album tracks.

MAJOR KONG: Watch out for a new "Doom Machine" rolling over you on the 20th January 2014

MAJOR KONG is an instrumental Doom Metal trio from Lublin, Poland. They began their journey in late 2010, initially as a project alongside their parent band – FIFTY FOOT WOMAN. After a couple of months they recorded the 4 track EP “Orogeneis” and began serving their slow guitar hypnosis live. "Doom for the Black Sun" - their debut album - was made in 2012.

MAJOR KONG have announced their second full-length album, which will be called "Doom Machine". Expect five tracks once again inspired by Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, old horror and sci-fi movies. Serves solid groove and shitloads of heavy, fuzzed-out, blues-driven Doom. There's some psychedelic vibe in too.

So keep your eyes and ears open or you will be overrun by MAJOR KONG's "Doom Machine" on the 20th of January. The year 2014 is gonna start heavy and slow as fuck, just the way we love it!

RED FANG have released video for "Blood Like Cream"! Their extensive European Tour starts in January 2014

While RED FANG wrap their way across the US tour this month, the rising rock group have released the video for “Blood Like Cream”, the first single off their new album WHALES AND LEECHES (Relapse).

“In keeping with a long tradition dating back to 2007, we have made another epic, hilarious video with Whitey McConnaughy, the content of which is completely unrelated to the lyrical content of the song,” explains the band’s bassist/vocalist Aaron Beam. “This song is about the stress of balancing a touring lifestyle with having a family back home, but who wants to see a video about that? BORING! Instead, we have a video featuring lots of blood, beer, and exercise--some of us did more running in this video that we’ve done the whole year to date. Also, Fred Armisen is in this one and he really steals the show. I thought I was a bad actor before, but after working with him, I see I cannot even qualify for such a high distinction as ‘bad.’ We hope everyone has as much fun watching it as we had making it!!”

Released October 18 on Relapse Records, WHALES AND LEECHES was produced by Chris Funk (Decemberists) and mixed by Vance Powell (White Stripes, Raconteurs, Kings of Leon). Featuring such guests as Mike Scheidt (Yob) and Pall Jenkins (The Black Heart Procession), WHALES AND LEECHES propels RED FANG into the upper stratosphere of the heavy rock and metal elite.

RED FANG have announced an extensive run of European tour dates in support of Whales and Leeches. The Portland, Oregon band will head to Europe in February and March 2014 in a tour spread across two legs. A full list of dates is below. Support on both sections of the tour will come from label mates and fellow riff-merchants, LORD DYING.

BRAVE BLACK SEA: Song-Teaser zum Debüt-Album online! Mit Ex-Musikern von Kyuss, Queens Of The Stone Age, Slo Burn und Brant Bjork

BRAVE BLACK SEA rekrutieren sich aus ehemaligen Mitgliedern von QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE, KYUSS und SLO BURN und demnach ist diesen Gentlemen kompromissloser Rock & Roll ganz sicher nicht fremd. Auch untereinander kennt man sich: In den späten 90ern haben Sänger Damon Garrison, Gitarrist Chris Hale und Drummer Alfredo Hernandez zusammen bei John Garcias Kyuss-Nachfolger Slo Burn gespielt. Alfredo war zuvor schon auf dem letzten Kyuss-Album And The Circus Leaves Town zu hören. Nach dem Aus von Slo Burn trommelte Alfredo das legendäre erste Album der Queens Of The Stone Age ein, spielte später bei Nick Oliveris Band MONDO GENERATOR und BRANT BJORK. Nach vielen Jahren, Bands, Alben, Touren, Projekten und Reisen sollten sich die Wege von Damon, Chris und Alfredo erneut kreuzen. Den Anstoß gab ein kurzes Telefongespräch zwischen Damon und Chris, der zwischenzeitlich in Las Vegas wohnte: „Ich ziehe zurück in die Wüste, mach dich bereit.“ Innerhalb von Minuten wurden Emails mit Songs, Riffs, Sounds und Ideen getauscht. Am nächsten Tag rief Damon Alfredo an, ganz einfach deshalb, weil „wir zu Ende bringen müssen, was wir damals angefangen haben“. Durch einen gemeinsamen Freund kamen sie in Kontakt mit Bassist Clint Cunningham, der ebenfalls gerade erst zurück in die Stadt gezogen war, nachdem er mit diversen Bands in Portland und Phoenix getourt hatte. Nach einer Woche Songwriting hatten sie eine Auswahl an potenziellen Album-Kandidaten zusammen.

Mit „The Five Visitors“ gibt es nun einen ersten Höreindruck von Brave Black Seas erstem Album Fragments, das in Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz am 04. April 2014 via V2 Benelux auf CD und Vinyl (limitiert) erscheinen wird:

Doom-Bescherung beim 9. Megalomania mit ATLANTEAN KODEX, DAWN OF WINTER & MOUNTAIN THRONE

Am vergangenen Samstag lud der Circle Of Tyrants zur neunten Megalomania-Party in den Erfurter Club Centrum ein, um gemeinsam mit den zahlreich angereisten Heavy und Doom Metal-Fans zu einem außerordentlich stimmgewaltigen Package die Fäuste in die Höhe zu strecken. Nach STEELCLAD aus Dresden sorgten MOUNTAIN THRONE mit den Songs ihrer aktuellen LP "Stormcoven" für einige Doom-geschwängerte Heavy Rock-Überraschungen.

Unser Hauptanreisegrund waren aber ganz klar DAWN OF WINTER, die ihren Status als Vorreiter des deutschen Doom Metal zu verteidigen hatten. Gerade weil sich die Baden-Würtemberger live und veröffentlichungstechnisch gern rar machen, spielten sie an diesem Abend meisterhaft ihre Doom-Joker vom zweiten Album, "The Peaceful Dead", und der 2012 erschienenen EP, "The Skull Of The Sorcerer", aus. Spätestens als die Refrainzeilen meines Lieblingstitels, "The Music Of Despair", erhaben aus der vergoldeten Kehle von Sänger Gerrit schallten, wurde ich mir einer Sache wieder völlig bewusst: "Doom is the soul of metal - primordial and pure - doom is the true essence of living - immortal - my cure"!

Das müssen sich ATLANTEAN KODEX im Anschluss daran auch gesagt haben, denn in so inbrünstiger, verschleppter Manier hatte ich die Headliner der Veranstaltung bisher noch nie wahrgenommen und erwischte mich erneut beim gruppendynamischen Fäuste-in-die-Luft-Strecken. Den Titel "Epic Voices Of Doom Metal" hatten sich an diesem Abend alle Bands, aber auch die Fans verdient. (SM)

Earlier this year, Hessian released their debut album Manégarmr through Southern Lord which was very well received indeed. The combined musical backgrounds of guitarist Levy Seynaeve (Amenra), drummer Tim Bryon (The Black Heart Rebellion), vocalist Bram Coussement and bass player Kenneth Vanhoutte fell effortlessly into place, pushing a sound that was at once pummeling, devouring and empowering. Named after the wolf which, in Norwegian mythology, devours the sun every night, Manégarmr focuses both sonically and lyrically on the endless cycles of destruction that are imminent to this life and the world in which we live. From the soaring take-off of “Ascension,” via the treacherous calm of central pieces “Vāmācāra” and “Father of Greed,” to the merciless onslaught that is “Mother of Time.” With towering guitars, frenzied drum patterns and savage vocals that sound like the howl of the lone wolf, Manègarmr is a furious blizzard of blackened metal, violently crashing into a maelstrom of ultra-metallic dark hardcore. Forged in 2003, the band’s debut EP, God Slave, was a self-released mission statement, welcoming INDIAN into the world like young, kicking, screaming giants. INDIAN’s first three full-lengths – The Unquiet Sky, Slights And Abuse, and The Sycophant, respectively – were all issued through Portland, Oregon-based metal imprint Seventh Rule Recordings. Each of these releases found the band gaining momentum and attracting followers, as well as performing shows with scene heavyweights such as Wolves in the Throne Room, Locrian, and Agalloch.

After signing to Relapse Records in 2010, INDIAN began to diligently craft their fourth full-length, knowing all eyes were on them. FROM BENEATH BILLOWS was founded in Oslo in 2005 by Øyvind Daaland Lesjø, Lars Kristian Jagtøyen, Lars Petter Strand, Kristian Malterud Moen and Lars Sundsbø. Bjørnar Børja later joined to replace Kristian Malterud Moen who left the band in 2006 in pursuit of a different kind of leisure.

The founders, with exception of Lars Sundsbø, started out as a stoner band named The Goon Killing, back in 2003. Lots of songs were written, but without a vocalist and a clear vision of what they tried to achieve, the project became stale and got shelved.

FROM BENEATH BILLOWS was born out of the desire to advance the band's creative process. The band strove to make their music deeper, heavier and more visual.

FROM BENEATH BILLOWS is a 5-head piece from Oslo, Norway. The quintet has been writing music in this constellation since 2005 and has released 1 prior full-length album.

In 2007 they released the 4 song, 50 minute debut, "Evolve", which received some very good feedback in webzines around the world.

Now, 6 years later, the follow-up is ready. "Monolith" is much larger in scale than "Evolve", and is the natural progression for the band as musicians and song writers. It was of course of utmost importance to keep the atmosphere and the mood from the previous album, but all changes occurred naturally. Over half a decade has passed since their debut, so what you hear on "Monolith" is the adult beast.

While the tale of "Evolve" was intimate, isolated and focused on man's inner struggles using maritime metaphors, "Monolith" is wider in its scope. Lyrical themes touch upon colonization, industrialization and the imminent gloom. Indeed not political, religious or preaching in any way - just an interesting framing for words and tones.

The essence, however, lie in the brush strokes and in the layers of the weave, in the delicate details and in the rich ambience that these aspects utter.

With "Monolith", the canvas is bigger and the color palette more vibrant. The end result is sometimes brighter than "Evolve", but at its core darker and more sinister.

"Monolith" is the natural progression for FROM BENEATH BILLOWS, stronger in its vision, while still hanging on to the characteristics of "Evolve".

STONEBURNER: Portland Sludge Metallers join Neurot Recordings

The Neurot Recordings family is pleased to welcome the audio devastation that is Portland’s STONEBURNER to their expanding roster of forward-thinking music.

HARK unveil cover art for 'Crystalline', which will be released worldwide in March 2014!

Welsh heavy rock power-trio HARK have finished recording their forthcoming Season of Mist debut, entitled ‘Crystalline’. The album was recorded at Monnow Valley Studios in Wales (BLACK SABBATH, RUSH, JUDAS PRIEST, PORTISHEAD), and mixed by CONVERGE guitarist Kurt Ballou (CONVERGE, HIGH ON FIRE, KVELERTAK, YOUNG WIDOWS), and will hit the stores on March 14th in Germany and the Benelux, March 17th in the UK, France, and the rest of Europe, and March 18th in North America. The cover artwork for 'Crystalline' illustrated by HARK's acclaimed graphic artist and guitarist/vocalist Jimbob Isaac (ex-TAINT) and track listing are below:

HARK has already released the 'Mythopoeia' 7” single, which they managed to sell out on tours with RED FANG and CLUTCH.

The Welsh progressive-power-sludge trio carry TAINT's torch forward, passed on from their legacy that began in 1994. With fresh chops and almighty riff power, HARK continue to fuse punk attack with Sabbathian dirge, and decorate post-whatever angularities with classic rock flourish. While Isaac's vocals expand on his tried and tested palette, his lyrics continue to shatter prose with bleak metaphor and acerbic spittle. Made of the former WHYTELEAF rhythm section Nikolai Ribnikov and Simon Bonwick, the HARK engine bring an OCD approach to song craft, and endlessly creative pummel. Their dynamic chops and blood lust for riffs meld with Isaac's honed and equally determined musical vision.

Regarding the recording of ‘Crystalline’, main man Jimbob Isaac stated: "Fingers to the bone. That has been one of our mottos since HARK's inception, and it carried us through to the recording studio. Long days, little sleep and grim determination made this record the beast that we believe it to be. We pushed ourselves in all kinds of ways, and that commitment resonates throughout. We're having fun biding our time, but there's only so long you can keep a bull in its pen."

Since 2007, WHEN ICARUS FALLS play a heavy post-metal throughout Europe without any consideration for a genre whatsoever. After an acclaimed EP in 2009 and a long one in 2012 called AEGEAN, they're coming back on February 4th with a brand new EP: "CIRCLES." After that, they'll hit the road for a couple of shows during Spring 2014.

Recorded by Raphaël Bovey at Blend Studio for the drums and at WIF's rehearsal room for guitars and voices, CIRCLES. is in the direct continuation of the previous albums. Between hazy atmospheres reminding the first EP - OVER THE FROZEN SEAS - and heavy riffs echoing AEGEAN's grand final, this new episode should delight fans of the genre.

"CIRCLES." suprises however by its dynamism, efficiency and its rich and complex atmospheres. It benefits also from the exploration of new sounds. The EP will also include a gorgeous remix of NYX which was previously released on the Falling Down II compilation in 2010.
