Sludge pioneers -(16)- confirmed for ROADBURN Festival 2014

-(16)- from Los Angeles have been confirmed for the 2014 Roadburn festival in Tilburg, the Netherlands (see flyer below).

Over the last two decades, Californian veterans -(16)- have been pioneering heavy-as-hell, ill tempered sludge metal, alongside fellow luminaries Buzzov*en, Eyehategod and Crowbar (among others).

Despite all the anguish, pain and countless lineup changes that 20 years brought, -(16)- remained a dependable source of gutsy, misery infested, torturous sludge, captured on albums like Drop Out, Zoloft Smile and Deep Cuts from Dark Clouds.

Whether its the band's mid tempo, aggressive metal assault, their sludgy dissonance or aggro-punk-hardcore filth, -(16)- spits it out with hateful, jaw-punching glee - thriving on chugging guitars, grinding bass and growling vocals that drive home the point like a blast of scuzzed-up vitriol.

-(16)- will be playing at the 2014 Roadburn festival on Saturday, April 12th at the 013 venue in Tilburg, The Netherlands. Other Relapse Records artists confirmed for Roadburn 2014 are Lord Dying, ASG, Locrian, Windhand, True Widow and Inter Arma.

“There have been quite a few old 80’s bands that have reformed and wrote a new album that turned out badly. That’s the trick to creating a new album after being out of the scene for a long time. AMPLIFEST 2013 has revealed its final band line-up, taking place on October 19th & 20th

Amplifest’s final line-up is out now, so it is safe to say the experience is all shaped up: during the 19th and the 19th of October Porto's Hard Club and Mercedes will be home of more than a music festival, and experience. So, and besides concerts, there will be the of screen two movies, an exhibition by David V. D’Andrea, and talks with the confirmed artists and Roadburn’s own artistic director, Walter Hoeijmakers.

The last bands to be added to the line-up are the super-outfit, stoner and post-rock hybrid Black Bombaim + la la la ressonance, the metaphysical grinders Utopium, the bass riff oriented post-rockers Katabatic, the bolero-blues explorer Don the Tiger, the cumbia droners HHY & the Macumbas, and the artistic endeavour of L’Enfance Rouge’s François Cambuzat Putan Club. Also, during the festival there will be a surprise performance of an unannounced band (thence the "surprise" factor).

Besides the acts above mentioned, Amplifest will present the screening of the mysterious film “Black Mass Rising” and of “À l’Est de l’enfer”, a documentary on the Indonesian black metal scene, and the Amplitalks, a new feature in the festival. Everyone in Amplifest will be invited to join us in an informal talk, first with Walter Hoeijmakers, Roadburn festival's artistic director (the promoter will also spin some records as a guest DJ), and then with some of the artists in the line-up, who will talk about the “Life on the Road” and about being on tour.

THE SKULL: Quality footage of debut show with original TROUBLE drummer Jeff 'Oly' Olson (Video) & album news

THE SKULL — the new band featuring original TROUBLE members vocaist Eric Wagner and drummer Jeff "Oly" Olson alongside TROUBLE's longtime bassist Ron Holzner and SACRED DAWN guitarists Michael Carpenter and Lothar Keller — peformed at Tequila Jaxx last Saturday, September 14 in Mentor-On-The-Lake, Ohio. Quality video footage filmed and edited by Ken Kitt and Kim Schleeper from Vidz R Us can be seen below. This was THE SKULL's first performance with Olson.

Olson rejoined THE SKULL last month, explaining in a statement: "I know that I've mentioned that I wouldn't perform TROUBLE's music anymore unless it's with the other original members, but I've had a change of heart. I want to rock again." Although I have been having a great time playing keys for IN-GRAVED (led by former PENTAGRAM guitarist Victor Griffin), I miss the drums and playing classic TROUBLE songs. I'm still going to jam with Victor, but there is room for THE SKULL too."

He added: "In just a few short months, 2014 will mark the 30th anniversary year for TROUBLE's debut record, 'Psalm 9'. TROUBLE guitarists Rick Wartell and Bruce Franklin are having fun with their new record, and I had fun writing some intros for it. It's just that Eric, Ron, and myself want to jam too and celebrate our 30th anniversary as well with a tour and a new record. We've worked just as hard as Bruce and Rick over the years and we feel that we've earned the privilege to celebrate with the fans as well. There is no animosity between the two bands and we intend to keep it that way."

"We are currently writing a debut record, set for release in 2014 and I've already submitted several songs to the guys. Excitement is in the air."

THE SKULL's debut CD will be produced by Billy Anderson (HIGH ON FIRE, SLEEP, NEUROSIS) this autumn in Portland, Oregon and will be released via as-yet-undetermined record label.

It takes a lot of heart and guts to play this style of music since the dinosaurs that started this kind of music are some of the very best bands to ever exist. Epic Doom Metal in our opinion started in Sweden with CANDLEMASS. Their intention was to write the first Epic Doom Metal album. ANOTHER END: Debut EP, "Whispers From...", out on September 20th

French post-metal/sludge purveyors ANOTHER END recently inked a deal with the Canadian underground label MULLIGORE PRODUCTION and are set to release their debut EP, "Whispers From...", on September 20th. The effort was recorded by Sylvain Debuis at the Rec N' Roll studios  in France.

ANCIIENTS announce Roadburn 2014 Performance!

Vancouver's ANCIIENTS have announced an appearance as part of next year's Roadburn Festival. The band has been slated to play on Thursday, April 10th in Tilburg, NL. Ticket pre-sales for the Festival will be available on Oct. 1st, at the official Roadburn Festival website.

ANCIIENTS will join SEPULTURA on their U.S. tour in November. ANCIIENTS will join the SEPULTURA tour on November 8th, and continue through the remainder of dates. The tour will also see ANCIIENTS play alongside UNEARTH and KATAKLYSM. A new confirmed list of tour dates can be found below.

ANCIIENTS also recently announced a new North American tour alongside TESSERACT and SCALE THE SUMMIT. The "Altered State North America 2013" tour is scheduled to start on Thursday, October 10th, in Edmonton, AB and will run through the United States and Canada before ending on October 29th.

ANCIIENTS are touring in support of their debut album, 'Heart of Oak'. The critically-acclaimed record is streaming here, and available now across several formats. The band was recently showcased as the featured artist in the latest installment of "Converse x Decibel". A mini-documentary about how the vast woodlands  and epic mountain ranges of British Columbia influence the band's elaborate and progressive songs is streaming here.

PELICAN - "FOREVER BECOMING"

Pelican, the Chicago-based quartet whose instrumental excursions to the confluence of caustic heaviness and cathartic melody pioneered a subgenre, have announced their first full album in four years, Forever Becoming, due October 14th on forward-thinking metal imprint Southern Lord. Recorded at Electrical Audio with Chris Common (who engineered the group’s last album as well as albums by Chelsea Wolfe and These Arms Are Snakes), Forever Becoming is an immense, speaker-rattling meditation on the acceptance of mortality and its place in the eternal cycle. Composed of eight songs (full tracklist below), the album boasts a sonic palette that veers from pummeling metal, to contemplative ambience, to melodic catharsis all with landmark grace.
Following a hiatus that saw the departure of founding guitarist Laurent Schroeder-Lebec and the arrival of new second guitarist Dallas Thomas (also of The Swan King), the forthcoming album is the work of a wholly revitalized unit, sounding more focused and assured than ever. The current lineup’s undeniable chemistry was forged in front of crowds at festival appearances, including Bonnaroo, Roadburn, and Maryland Death Fest, as well as a handful of headlining club shows. WHEELFALL: Studio live sessions video episode 3 - "Howling" from Interzone album

Prepare to worship at the altar of the HEAVY RIFF. We are very pleased to be able to present the third episode of the WHEELFALL’s “Live Studio Sessions”. Only live music is real, no tricks, no cheatings, only the band by itself. Only the truth. This episode featured “Howling”, second track on the first Wheelfall album "Interzone".

Formed in 2009 in Nancy, France, the original WHEELFALL lineup included Fabien W. Furter on guitar and vocals, Niko El Moche on bass, Cactus Flo on guitar and Quentin Vega on drums with their first recorded appearance being on 2010’s “From the Blazing Sky at Dusk” Ep, DIY self-released EP which made a splash in the stoner/desert rock international scene. Right after, in mid-2010, the band replaced Quentin with drummer Niko Elbow Giraud, who used to attend the loud, pounding and noisy WHEELFALL gigs.
In 2012, the new line-up cranked out the highly-celebrated “Interzone” LP, quickly followed by a split EP the month after and keep touring, managing to severely deafen metal fanatics. These three early releases defined the basis of the WHEELFALL’s style – a loud, massive and sick metal/stoner/doom mixing of thundering guitars, roaring bass, huge and heavy drums, deep gritty vocals, which each tune seeming slower than the one before it. Giving as much importance to its music than its lyrical themes, each WHEELFALL’s song is part of one and only pessimistic and speculative fiction exploring the reaction of individuals and society confronted to issues caused by its technological evolution, which trap ruthlessly the listener in the band’s world. The band is never stuck into one musical genre and its motto could be "Move forward or die like a dinosaur", so don't expect anything from the band but only what they want to do. Hymns like “Holy Sky”, “It comes from the Mist” or the 22 minutes behemoth “Interzone” are perfect examples of how wide the WHEELFALL’s musical spectrum is, and the band became instantaneously one of the driving forces of the stoner rock/metal French scene.
In 2013-2014, WHEELFALL will be steamrolling their way across France and Europe. We hope for their own sake that the Europeans are familiar with the concept of earplugs.

ISAAK: Professional gang entered the band's rehearsal studio and stole the whole property - YOU CAN HELP!

In einer Nacht- und Nebel-Aktion gelang es professionellen Dieben sämtliches Equipment der Band zu rauben. "Das Schloss wurde geknackt, die Türen schwer beschädigt und sie ließen nichts übrig", so berichtete die Band.

Aber Schwarz-Malen gehört nicht zu den Stärken von ISAAK, darum haben sie selbst schon Alles, was an finanziellen Mitteln noch übrig war investiert, damit das neue Album, das planmäßig im Herbst 2014 auf Smallstone erscheinen soll, fertig werden kann.

"Try to imagine walking down to your rehearsal, thinking about the riffs, building the songs of your new record… then you realize something bad in the air: arrived the rehearsal you discover nothing more has left…"

This is the official first statement after a professional gang entered ISAAK's rehearsal studio and stole the whole property of the band: cabinets, mixers, guitars, bass, drums ...everything.

“Lock broken, doors damaged and your whole life... empty. That's what no-one should experience. It's like your whole life disappeared over night”, says the band again. “This was the place we focused our ideas and wrote for the new album, tentative schedule for Small Stone Records fall 2014.“ ISAAK spent a horrible week while watching video and foto recording made by the police and whatever.

... We immediately spoke with Scott Hamilton, our label manager, and have had a meeting with our manager Mario Ruggeri of The Crew. We decided to react instantly. So we started investing all our money but we are still far from recoup everything”.

At this point ISAAK is 10,000$ far from its goal, and that’s the reason band decided to open a crowdfunding action.

“We thought about this and that and what could help to get back on track. So we fixed a certain amount of rewards and setted up a crowdfunding action."

ALUNAH: Announcing three finished tracks for their 3rd studio album

ALUNAH have been busy writing new material for their 3rd studio album, and announce that three of the finished tracks are to be called "Bricket Wood Coven", "Maidens of Herne" and Summerland".

They will be entering the studio in November to record these tracks in order to get a feel for the sound of the album, and also to provide Napalm Records with an insight regarding what they have been working on, and the direction it is taking. Once again ALUNAH will be working with Greg Chandler (Esoteric) at Priory Studios.

The super talented, and master of beautiful imagery, Michael Cowell is currently illustrating the visuals for the album, and we hope to provide you with an album title very soon.

LORD DYING and ASG confirmed for ROADBURN festival 2014

If there's one thing that unites everyone at the Roadburn festival it's riffs. Portland, Oregon hessians Lord Dying have knocked-out some of the tastiest, meatiest, riffs of recent times via their skull-cracking caveman metal debut album Summon The Faithless on Relapse Records, and so it is that the Roadburn festival announced that they will be playing Roadburn 2014 on Thursday, April 10th at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland.

Lord Dying’s debut album Summon The Faithless is a brutalist primitive take on the doomed fist-pounding head-banging mania of High On Fire, suffused with the rusty razor edge of early death metal. Scything, bludgeoning guitars rip and tear through flesh and bone as frontman Erik Olson spits bile like the bastard offspring of Cronos and Matt Pike.

North Carolina's ASG are currently celebrating their highest charting and most critically acclaimed album to date, their breakthrough release Blood Drive, which is their first for Relapse Records and fourth album to date. Bandhaus Leipzig: OMEGA MASSIF have Risen From The Depth Of Doom

Letzte Nacht war keineswegs Schicht im Schacht, denn das dritte Risen From The Depth Of Doom-Minifestival lud mit großen Namen der akustischen Doom-Kunst in den Leipziger Bandhaus-Keller ein.

Den experimental-musikalischen Abend eröffnete N aka Helmut Neidhardt und entführte uns in düster Prora-ische Dröhnwelten zwischen Ostseewellen und morbider NS-Architektur - eine ungewöhnliche Gefühlsreise der Superlative mit künstlerischem und Geschichte aufarbeitendem Anspruch.

Danach wirkten UR wie ein junger, stürmischer Auerochse, der aus den Nüstern schnaubend alles niederwalzte, das sich ihm in den Weg zu stellen wagte. Dass dazu keine schnellen Rhythmen vonnöten sind, haben die Dresdner gestern bewiesen. Denn nach dem Motto: "Weniger ist manchmal mehr.", vibrierte der Bandhausboden angenehm, aber nicht weniger beeindruckend zu den Bass- und Gitarrenlinien der Post-Doom-Filigranarbeiter.

O GRACEFUL MUSING's BURDEN konnten mich live leider nicht genauso überzeugen, wie es den Chemnitzern mit ihrem in Heim- und Handarbeit selbst produzierten Debutalbum im letzten Jahr gelungen ist. Das Zusammenspiel und der Bühnenklang waren meine Meinung nach nicht optimal. Vielen Gästen reichte das Gebotene aber dennoch aus, um sich nach dem Auftritt eine der schön aufgemachten CDs für die eigene Sammlung mit nach Hause zu nehmen.

Über den Headliner des Abends brauchen nicht viele Worte verloren werden: Sie stiegen aus den dunkelsten Tiefen der Mine empor - das Grubenlicht in der einen, die Schürfinstrumente in der anderen Hand. Es blieb nur Dunkelheit und Zerstörung, nachdem im Schein ihrer falen Lichter alles zerborsten ward, auf immerdar und unwiederbringlich - OMEGA MASSIF. (SM)

ARGUS: "Beyond the Martyrs" will be released on the 4th of October

“Beyond the Martyrs”, ARGUS third full length album, starts where their 2011’s release “Boldly Stride the Doomed” had left us -at the Ruins of Ouroboros.In between these two releases ARGUS has tested its strength and valor in several live shows both in their homeland and in Europe, receiving high praises from fans. Although a sense of impending fate marks again their compositions, the characteristic Doom Metal elements which were a distinguished trademark of Argus’ past releases have now mostly left place to a straight and genuine Heavy Metal approach, its nature rooted in the most classic environment of Heavy Metal tradition.

Argus' third album is sure to force metal heads everywhere to raise horn-crested fists to the sky. "Beyond the Martyrs" contains the hallmarks of their previous works - twin guitars, soaring vocals, and a driving rhythm section; it is heavy, melodic, epic, and brooding all at once.

After their successful shows at festivals such as Hammer of Doom in 2011 and Dublin Doom Days in 2012, the band will hit again the European soil with a proper tour in October 2013 in order to promote “Beyond the Martyrs”.

Over two years in the making, the latest LP from jesu follows the LP ‘Ascension’, the last jesu full length release, which was on the Caldo Verde label, ran by Mark Kozelek, mastermind behind both Red House Painters and Sun Kil Moon, this was now over two and a half years ago.

Jesu main-man Justin K Broadrick, has slowly worked at this album during this period whilst retaining activities with the reunited Godflesh, and pursuing other projects and remixes, as is usual for Justin; in this period amongst many, Justin has remixed both Mogwai and Cult Of Luna.

This ‘rest’ period from jesu enabled Justin to focus on what should be the next step for the project - Godflesh’s renewed existence has enabled him to fine tune what jesu now means to him, this LP is less reliant on the shorter guitar lead songs of ‘Ascension’, and instead looks further inward to reveal a deeper, sombre but more dynamic musical experience than 2011’s  ‘Ascension’.

Beginning with ‘Homesick’, with it’s guitar hooks, shoegaze textures and familar jesu sound, one can be mislead into considering that this new album will follow a familiar jesu trajectory but instead the following tracks use jesu’s aesthetic but take in dub, post punk and electronica along the way, to create maybe the most dynamic jesu album to date, possibly recalling the ‘Silver’ EP from 2006.

The epic ‘The Great Leveller’, at over 17 minutes, is the boldest statement of the songs here-featuring the albums only other player besides Justin, Nicola Manzan, who commands a one man orchestra of strings, a new and welcomed feature, the song also lyrically deals with the existential drain that is early parenthood, since Justin became a Father for the first time just before beginning work on this LP, and this life changing experience is mostly what this album examines thematically.

The album is mastered by James Plotkin, and was recorded and mixed at Avalanche Studio - the studio owned by Justin K Broadrick.

New York metal alchemists, A STORM OF LIGHT, will unleash their long-anticipated new studio offering this Fall! Entitled Nations To Flames, the 11-track follow up to the band’s critically-lauded 2011 opus, As The Valley Of Death Becomes Us, Our Silver Memories Fade, was recorded with Travis Kammeyer (OCOAI, Generation Of Vipers) at Fahrenheit Studios in Johnson City, Tennessee, mixed with Matt Bayles (Isis, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Botch, Mastodon) at Red Room Recording in Seattle, Washington and mastered by Brad Boatright (Sleep, From Ashes Rise, Nails) at Audiosiege in Portland, Oregon.

Additionally, Nations to Flames features Soundgarden’s Kim Thayil and Indian/Nachtmystium’s Will Lindsay on select tracks.

Centered around the apex of human failure, Nations To Flames bears witness to the fall of all governments, all nations, and all religions. The record is both musically and thematically captivating and marks the STORM collective’s darkest, most immediately punishing creation to date.

Even the more ‘epic’ songs are shorter but still accomplish the same journey as the longer songs used to. We’ve ditched the rock elements of the last record and  let our early influences of Killing Joke, Bad Brains, Metallica and Crash Worship seep in. We are bringing back the intensity of Black Ocean but with the speed and precision ore akin to our metal influences. While there are still some slower/sludgy tunes, some songs are twice as fast as the older material.”

Beehoover are back, breaking a three year studio silence with an outrageous deluge of din in the form of new album The Devil And His Footmen, due for a September release on Exile On Mainstream.

The multi-faceted clawing at the stoner doom mantle which defined their 2010 full length, Concrete Catalyst, has been taken to pastures fresh; self-recorded behind the locked doors of their rehearsal room, Beehoover’s latest is a swirl of raw, sultry tones and rumbling octaves that strike chords with braggadocio 70’s hard rock as much as it does the thunderous rumble of Black Cobra and the jutting angles of Unsane. Beehoover are at their most rocking here, tangling the long hair of the headbangers with all the genres of beard in one matted toupee of oddball rhythms and histrionic vocals.

Formed in 2003, the German duo known as Beehoover have released three albums to date, capitalising on their distinctive drum and bass concoction. The Devil And His Mainstream will be the fourth album by Beehoover released on Exile On Mainstream, and will be available as CD, LP and digital.
