Spirit Descent (Interview)

Moin Andreas, Norddeutschland ist nicht unbedingt bekannt dafür, Doom Bands hervorzubringen. Wie bist du denn zu dieser Musikrichtung gekommen?

"Ich weiß, dass die "Fischkopp"-Fraktion nicht unbedingt für ihre Doom-Szene bekannt ist, aber der Underground brodelt auch hier. SPIRIT DESCENT ist ja auch nicht meine erste Doom-Band, nicht einmal Cold Embrace, welches wohl die erfolgreichste Doom-Band aus dem hohen Norden ist, naja, zumindest bis 2008 war es auch die einzige nördlich von Hamburg. Zum Doom kommt man ja nicht einfach so nach dem Motto: "Eines Morgens nach seligem Schlaf wurde mir klar, ich muss doomen!" Es ist eher so, dass man dafür geboren sein muss. Weißt Du, die ganzen Speed-Fanatiker, welche den Sinn des Lebens darin sehen, noch mehr Bier zu trinken und zu noch schnellerer Mucke zu bangen war nie die Sparte Menschen, zu denen ich mich gezählt habe. Ich habe im Laufe der Jahre zwar diverse Gastspielreisen in thrashige bzw. todes-bleierne Gefilde hinter mich gebracht, aber letzten Endes bin ich dem Doom immer treu geblieben. Nach meinem mehr oder weniger freiwilligen Ausscheiden bei Cold Embrace gab es erstmal einen verdammt tiefen Fall, doch statt zu stagnieren und aufzugeben, habe ich mich hingesetzt und wurde produktiv. Andere dröhnen sich lieber zu und reden viel, wenn der Tag lang ist, das ist aber nicht mein Stil. Noch hat mir jemand zu verbieten, die Musik zu machen, die ich immer machen wollte, was zugegebener-maßen hier oben tatsächlich recht schwer ist. Es mangelt einfach an guten Musikern, die, wie gesagt, die Macht der Langsamkeit zu schätzen wissen. Es gibt hier aber ein verdammt großes Potential, und wenn dem Norddeutschen Doomnachwuchs mal jemand erklärt, dass der Erwerb eines Plattenspielers und kiloweise Gras nicht ausreicht, um in den Doomhimmel zu kommen, sind wir schon ein großes Stückchen weiter. Aber ich schweife ab: Als Mensch, der von Natur aus Stress und hohe Geschwindigkeiten hasst, lag das in der Natur der Dinge. Black Sabbath, Saint Vitus und Candlemass waren die Initialzündung, wie wohl bei jedem zweiten Doomhead, ist also gar nicht mal so unüblich."

Danke, dass du meine Theorie von der lethargischen Grundnatur des gemeinen Doomheads bestätigst. Zumindest sind wir etwas entspannter als der hektische Rest da draußen. Weil du es erwähnst, warum ging es nicht mehr bei Cold Embrace?

"Ich bin bei Cold Embrace, obwohl es ursprünglich meine Band war, ausgestiegen, weil es zwischenmenschlich einfach nicht mehr funktionierte. Zwei verschiedene Grundeinstellungen prallten aufeinander und da ich endlose Diskussionen und Monologe hasse, bin ich der Devise 'Der Klügere gibt nach!' gefolgt und habe mich verabschiedet. Und es geht mir, besonders durch SPIRIT DESCENT, verdammt gut, ich fühle mich frei und kann mich endlich wieder um meine Visionen kümmern, die bei CE im Laufe der Zeit doch arg gelitten haben."

Es ist schade, dass gute Geschichten oft so bitterböse ausgehen müssen, aber wenn man miteinander nicht mehr gut Kirschen essen kann, dann sollten manche Pfade definitiv auseinandergehen. Dein Pfad ist jetzt SPIRIT DESCENT und der scheint mir links und rechts von leuchtenden Blütenpflanzen und monströsen Kreuzen eingerahmt zu sein. Kläre uns bitte über die Entstehung und die Bandwerdung auf.

"Ich habe im Prinzip dort angefangen, wo ich mit Cold Embrace zuletzt aufgehört habe, beim traditionellen, epischen Doom. Bei CE wurde die Viking-Thematik im Laufe der Zeit immer dominanter und musikalisch ging es eher in die Doom-Rock-Richtung, zumindest bis zur aktuellen Scheibe, auf der sogar ein Drone-Song vertreten sein wird.

SPIRIT DESCENT stehen eher für die "Doomklassik". Ich hatte nie im Sinn, das Slo-Mo-Rad neu zu erfinden, sondern einfach nur meine Erfahrungen und Emotionen musikalisch zu bebildern. Als ich die ersten Demosongs an Jan weitergegeben habe, war er sofort begeistert, denn er war auf der Suche nach einer neuen Herausforderung, nachdem sich seine alte Band Deceptive Silence aufgelöst hat. Ich war schon damals von seiner professionellen Herangehensweise an die Ausarbeitung seines Gesangs sehr angetan und wusste, wenn ich mal was Eigenes aufziehe, ist er der richtige Mann am Mikro!

Guido ist erst zu den Aufnahmen zu uns gestoßen, ein komplett bekloppter Drummaniac, der eigentlich eher aus der progressiven Ecke kommt, wobei ihm Langsamkeit aber nicht fremd ist. Jojo, der einige der Soli übernommen hat, ist ebenfalls ein brillanter Musiker. Nun könnte man natürlich frotzeln: 'Der Herr Libera hat sich für seine Scheibe nur Freaks herangezogen!' Aber mal im Ernst, wenn Du die Chance hast, mit guten Leuten zu arbeiten und da auch noch eine intensive, doomige Verbindung draus wird, why not ? Man muß sehen, wie es nun weitergeht. 'Doominion' ist im Kasten, die letzten Mixdetails werden geklärt. Dann wird sich zeigen, wer wirklich mit dem Herzen dabei ist, denn das ist letzten Endes das Entscheidende."

Die Songs "Land Of Tears", "Path Of Doom" und "A New Dawn" gab es bereits auf eurer Demo zu Beginn diesen Jahres zu hören. Hast du die anderen sechs Titel von "Doominion" auch im Alleingang geschrieben?

"Ja, alle Songs stammen aus meiner Feder. Wie gesagt, ich war wie besessen und es wurden ja, wie Du weißt, noch 2 weitere aufgenommen."

Oh ja, das weiß ich! Das, was ich bisher gehört habe, macht die die Zeit bis zum Release nicht wirklich kürzer. Wann ist es denn nun endlich soweit?

"Das wüsste ich auch gern. Ich kann die Scheibe leider nicht in Eigenregie rausbringen. Das lassen die Finanzen nicht zu und für Promotion bei Labels sieht es zeitlich bei mir momentan ganz übel aus, da ich einen Intensivkurs in Sachen Videoproduktion besuche und ich einer von 2 Leuten bin, die sich mit Musik und Ton auskennen. Alle anderen fragen mich schon immer, ob ich nicht was für sie komponieren könnte oder wollen wissen, wie die Software funktioniert, mit der sie arbeiten und so weiter. Jan nimmt mir allerdings einen guten Teil der Arbeit ab, so dass ich mal denke, dass es Anfang 2010 soweit ist. Du weißt ja, im Doom ticken die Uhren langsamer. Letzten Endes stehen wir ja auch nicht unter Druck. Die Musik von Spirit Descent ist doch recht zeitlos und muss nicht wie irgendein trendorientierter Metalcore-Bullshit sofort auf den Markt, weil der Trend ja morgen abebben könnte (im Falle Metalcore hoffe ich, dass genau das passiert, ich kann dieses uninspirierte Geheule und Gekreische von Emokids, die aussehen wie Banker einfach nicht mehr ertragen)."

Wie bereits gesagt, habt ihr das Material für das geplante Album fertig im Kasten. Wo habt ihr aufgenommen?

"Die Drums,Leads und Vocals haben wir im Rosenquarz-Tonstudio aufgenommen, trotz aller Differenzen bei CE ist Michael Hahn ein sehr guter Producer und das Studio ist bestens ausgestattet, zudem haben wir dort Bands wie Warning, The River und Lamp Of Thoth aufgenommen. Außerdem befindet sich das Studio direkt vor der Haustür. Es war also naheliegend, dort die entsprechenden Parts einzuspielen. Die Gitarren sowie den Bass habe ich bei mir in meinem inzwischen nicht mehr ganz so kleinen Heimstudio aufgenommen, meistens in der Nacht, ganz in Ruhe und völlig ungestört. Zumindest bei 'Doominion' war und ist es mir schon wichtig, die Kontrolle über den Sound zu behalten, weshalb ich das Album selber abmische, natürlich nicht, ohne auf die Vorschläge meiner Bandkollegen einzugehen!"

Wenn ich richtig zähle, dann werden ein Intro und acht Songs auf "Doominion" zu hören sein. Meine absoluten Favoriten sind der gediegen rollende Opener "Greed", das schleppende und sowohl ur-Cathedral-ischen als auch den Warning-Hymnen ins nichts nachstehende "Land Of Tears", "In Hatred" als verhältnismäßig groovig riffendes Stück, natürlich "The Path Of Doom", das verträumte und gleichzeitig hoffnungsvolle "A New Dawn", "Of A Nation Forlorn" mit all seiner Pathetik und last but not least "Stranger On Earth", welches meine Doom-Seele auf akustisch-minimalisierende Weise in Sicherheit wiegt. Vom aus der Wertung fallenden Intro mal abgesehen weist nur "Demon" zwischen den Vocalparts leichte Überleitungsschwächen auf. Woher beziehst du nur deine Inspiration beim Komponieren?

"Wenn ich neue Songs schreibe, geschieht das niemals nach dem Motto: 'Ich muss jetzt aber kreativ sein!' Es gibt Phasen, da bin ich einfach nicht in der Lage, ein Instrument auch nur anzusehen, weil nur Mist dabei rumkommen würde. Dann aber gibt es Zeiten, in denen ich nichts anderes machen kann, außer zu komponieren. Es sprudelt dann einfach aus mir raus, bzw. die Riffs strömen mir tonnenweise aus den Fingern. Dabei vermeide ich es innerhalb dieser Kreativschübe, mich mit anderen Bands zu beschäftigen, sprich, wenn ich in dieser Zeit Musik höre, dann höchstens Mal einen guten Soundtrack oder klassische Musik, um zu vermeiden, dass dieser 'klingt wie XY'-Effekt entsteht. Interessant ist übrigens, dass das Grundriff von 'Land Of Tears' schon 10 Jahre alt ist und mal für Cold Embrace gedacht war, aber als langweilig und uninspiriert abgelehnt wurde. 'Demon' lebt vom Gesang, ganz klar, ist auch der einfachste Song auf der Scheibe. 'A New Dawn' ist dem Menschen gewidmet, dem ich soviel zu verdanken habe und 'The Path Of Doom' eine kleine Abrechnung mit der Vergangenheit. 'Of A Nation Forlorn' und 'Stranger On Earth' sind an sich schon kleine Werke, da habe ich einfach kein Ende gefunden und Jan hatte viel Raum für sein lyrisches Konzept, und glaube mir, der Mann macht sich wirklich Gedanken, wenn er Texte schreibt. 'In Hatred' ist in der Tat recht groovig geworden, die erste Fassung war viel langsamer, doch der Drive steht dem Song schon ganz gut zu Gesicht. 'Greed' war von Anfang an der perfekte Opener, da in diesem Song quasi alles enthalten ist, was das Album ausmacht. Ursprünglich gab es noch 'Friend To Foe', der allerdings von vorn herein mein Sorgenkind war. Du kennst den Song und weißt, was ich meine. 'Veracity' als Tribut an die alten NWOBHM-Recken darf nicht unbeachtet bleiben und findet deshalb seinen Weg auf das Album."

Ich fiebere dem Tag der Veröffentlichung, wann immer der auch genau sein wird, schon entgegen und hoffe, dass ihr vielleicht schon vorher den einen oder anderen Gig spielt. Ist da schon irgendetwas geplant?

"Leider nicht. Ohne feste Besetzung ist das etwas schwierig, denn wie es ausschaut, fehlt uns auf jeden Fall noch ein Gitarrist. Ob Jojo letzten Endes dabei bleibt, ist auch fraglich. Motiviert ist er, sehr sogar, aber als freiberuflicher Servicetechniker in Bremen unterwegs.

Der Kern von SPIRIT DESCENT sind Jan und ich, das steht schonmal fest und Guido ist der dritte Mann im Statte. Aber die Gitarrenfront ist leider noch nicht stabil, über 6 Arme verfüge ich unglücklicherweise auch nicht. Aber wie gesagt, wir haben Zeit!"

Du bist momentan also auf der Suche nach einem (oder zwei) interessierten und qualifizierten Gitarero(s). Was sollte der- oder diejenige denn mitbringen, um bei SPIRIT DESCENT dauerhaft Fuß zu fassen?

"Motivation und das Gespür für Doom, dabei ist es mir völlig egal, ob derjenige aus Timbuktu kommt oder aus der Antarktis, was zählt, ist das Herz und die Leidenschaft, nun gut, ein gewisses technisches Können sollte auch vorhanden sein, aber ich habe keine Lust auf Leute, die sonst aus der Highspeedfraktion kommen und denken, langsam spielen sei leicht und sich auf Grund dessen bei mir melden. Ich würde mir auch ein gewisses Alter wünschen, Ü30 wäre schön, ist aber kein Muss, denn wir sind ja schon 3 alte Säcke!"

Wie das eben so ist: "Je oller, um so doller...!" Für mich trifft das, zumindest was den Doom angeht, genauso zu. Dann bleibt mir an dieser Stelle nur noch, dir für dieses informative Gespräch zu danken und dass du uns bereits jetzt so viel über das geplante Album-Debut von SPIRIT DESCENT verraten hast.

"Gern geschehen, hat mir Spaß gemacht und die Zeit habe ich mir wirklich gerne genommen! DOOM !!!"

Samsara Blues Experiment (Interview)

Hi Christian, was hat dich denn dazu gebracht, der schönen Stadt Wernigerode im Harz den Rücken zuzukehren und in unsere Bundeshauptstadt Berlin auszuwandern?

"Hey, tja sagen wir, es war ein großer Neuanfang in jeglicher Hinsicht (Band, Arbeit, Privatleben) und außerdem habe ich mich damals entschlossen mit meiner mittlerweile Frau zusammen zu leben und Wernigerode bietet mittlerweile nicht mehr viel außer der schönen Landschaft. Also keine Clubs, demzufolge keine Konzerte, kaum Musiker, nicht mal ein ordentliches Kino usw."

Das klingt hart, aber für mich als ehemaligen Ackerhüpfer sehr nachvollziehbar. Gehörte das Ableben von Terraplane dann also nur zu den einkalkulierten Kollateralschäden oder gab es andere Gründe?

"Sagen wir so, es war für mich in vielerlei Hinsicht damals Zeit was Neues zu machen. Wenn ich so zurückblicke, war auch Terraplane für mich im Sommer 2007 immer mehr zu einer Einschränkung geworden. Da war ich ja "nur" Gitarrist und schrieb zwar den Großteil der Musik und ein gutes Maß an Texten, aber irgendwo war ich, glaub ich, in mir drin schon immer eher Frontman als Terraplane-Sänger Christian Oelke und, was noch viel schlimmer war, das Line-up der Band damals war relativ komisch, mit einnem über 50-jährigen Drummer (Nichts gegen ihn persönlich!), den man halt gezwungenermaßen genommen hatte, weil es keine anderen Leute in der Gegend gab und der dann aber lieber so was wie Dream Theater mochte als einen guten Heavy Psychedelic Jam. Da ging halt einiges am ursprünglichen "Spirit" verloren. Ich habe mich dann so im Juni 2007 entschieden, nach Berlin zu gehen, wollte aber noch die letzten Konzerte mit den Jungs spielen und zumindest alle zwei Wochen proben. Aber der Herr Oelke hat dann sofort seinen Austritt verkündet, der Drummer zog ca. zehn Minuten nach (...), so dass ich in den letzten Wochen in Wernigerode dann zu-sammen mit Florian Furtner (dem letzten Terraplane Basser) und Robin von Marogreen den Grundstein für Samsara gelegt habe. Wir haben uns da quasi dann bei nur drei oder vier Proben ins Nirvana gejammt. War sehr cool und ich denke manchmal sehr gerne daran. Steht ja auch ein bisschen was auf Youtube davon. (Wink mit dem Zaunpfahl – Anm.d.Verf.) Terraplane hatte in den sieben Jahren Bandbestehen natürlich auch viele tolle Momente, aber es ging halt so nicht mehr."

Mit Samsara Blues Experiment bist du sozusagen auf deiner musikalischen Insel angekommen. Was ist, mal abgesehen von den beschriebenen Umständen, der Unter-schied zur Musik von Terraplane?

"Meine musikalische Insel, hm, sagen wir, ich bin sehr zufrieden mit dem, was wir (!) machen. SBE haben sich ja auch noch mal ein richtiges Stück entwickelt und werden das hoffentlich auch weiter tun. Es gibt einige sehr bedeutende Unterschiede zu Terraplane, z.B. sind nicht alle Texte depressiv bzw. in irgendeiner Weise negativ. So weit ich mich erinnern kann, haben wir bei Terraplane quasi immer nur geschrieben, wenn uns irgendwas angekotzt hat. Ich bilde mir ein, die Lyrics selber auch besser zum Ausdruck bringen zu können. Besser als das jemand könnte, dem ich da (wieder) erst erklären müsste, wo er was zu singen hat. Das war halt bei Terraplane manchmal so und ich hatte manchmal ganz andere Vorstellungen von "meinen" Songs. Auch musikalisch sind wir etwas breiter gefächert. Hans und Richard bringen manchmal die kuriosesten Inputs, wie das funkige Jam-Teil "Double Freedom" oder Maultrommeln. Die zweite Rhythmusgitarre gibt vor allem live noch mal einen echten Schub. Generell sind alle meine Mitmusiker jetzt schon auf einem sehr hohen Level, wodurch die ganze Sache halt auch mehr Spaß macht. In meiner Vergangenheit musste ich z.B. manchmal anderen noch Sachen beibringen, was mich echt immer genervt hat. Hab da generell wenig Geduld und will immer am liebsten sofort 100% von allem. Musikalisch unterscheidet sich SBE nicht so viel von meiner letzten Band. Wir hatten bei Terraplane auch diesen Mix aus Heavy Psychedelia, 70er Jahre und Doom. Bei SBE kommen noch diese vorher genannten Nuancen dazu und wir sind, glaub ich, auch noch ein bisschen extremer. Auf manchen Songs des kommenden Albums haben wir 40 Tracks mit zweifachen Leads, Synths, Orgeln, Sitar, Tanpura. Sagen wir SBE ist eine sehr viel intensivere Erfahrung und live zu 99 % überzeugend, was bei Terraplane bei nicht mal annähernd so war. SBE ist eine echte Liveband! Terraplane war leider in den meisten Belangen sehr viel weniger professionell. Sagen wir, ich fühle mich auf dem richtigen Weg und darin bestätigt, alles Alte hinter mir gelassen zu haben."

Der Bandname ist ziemlich originell. Wie bist du denn darauf gekommen. Und in-wiefern spiegeln die Worte Samsara, Blues und Experiment euer Schaffen wieder?

"Samsara Blues Experiment, ja… , ich hatte damals - so irgendwann 2006 war das glaub ich - zum zweiten Mal Herrmann Hesses "Siddhartha" gelesen und schon beim ersten Mal hat mich das Buch ziemlich begeistert und das mit dem Samsara ist dann irgendwie hängengeblieben. Irgendwann kam ich zu so einer Art Eingebung mit der Phrase Samsara Blues Experiment. Nach "Siddhartha" kam auch eine Zeit, in der ich mich sehr für Hinduismus und fernöstliche Lehren interessiert habe. Dazu noch die Sitar - perfekter Hippiekram, könnte man meinen. Zur Gesamtdeutung und der Frage, in wie weit diese Worte die Band widerspiegeln, kann man das so sehen: SAMSARA bezeichnet im Wesentlichen den Kreislauf des irdischen Seins. Ich hatte vorher schon gesagt, dass ich hoffe, dass sich die Band und ich selbst als Musiker und Mensch ständig weiterentwickeln werden und nie an einem Punkt stehen bleiben, an dem man denkt: "Ja geil, jetzt fetzt alles, lasst uns nichts verändern". Das bezeichnet Samsara, das Streben der Seele oder des inneren Selbst nach Vollendung. Auch mal andere Wege zu gehen, auch mal die Unbequemen auszuprobieren. Das geht aber auch über viel mehr Punkte als nur die Musik hinaus, die dann aber letztendlich alle im Gesamtbild eine Rolle spielen. Alles, was dich zu dem macht, was du bist. Ich gehe ja z.B. nicht nur zur Bandprobe und spiele einfach meine Rolle, sondern reflektiere Dinge aus meinem Privatleben oder Sachen die mir sonst so passieren in meinen Texten und der Art wie ich einen Song spiele. Im Hindusimus und anderen Religionen oder spirituellen Wegen - z.B. auch der Buddhismus kennt ja Samsara - gibt es auch einen großen Negativaspekt des Ganzen, wo Samsara Gebundensein oder gar Gefangen-sein in einem schier ewig erscheinenden Kreislauf bedeutet. Damit kann man ja wunderbar den Blues verbinden: "Woke up this morning, realized I was still alive in all this mess on Earth." Naja, haha...

Der Faktor BLUES wird bei mir sicher immer präsent sein, das belegt meine mu-sikalische Vergangenheit, mein Gitarrespiel, meine persönlichen Vorlieben, bezogen auf die Musik die ich mir kaufe. Sehr viele Leute sagen: "Das ist gar kein Blues, was ihr macht!" Ich würde hier direkt Jimi Hendrix anbringen, dem man das schon in den 60ern zum Vorwurf machte und der für mich persönlich einer der (!) Überblueser schlechthin bleibt. Es geht beim Blues für mich ausschließlich um das Gefühl und nicht um ein beschissenes Musikschul-schema oder das ewige "Woke up this morning…"-Gejammer. Klar gibt es einen Haufen Spartendenker, die das vielleicht nie kapieren werden. Ich sehe uns natürlich nicht als klassische Bluesband, aber der Blues ist generell da, ohne Frage.

Zum Thema EXPERIMENT passt das halt alles. Wir mixen letztendlich alles munter durcheinander: Blues, Stoner, Doom, Indien, Space Rock, 60er Jahre Acid Psych, 80er Jahre Metal und Infectious Grooves - haha, so ungefähr...

Zusammengefasst also eine Band, die sich hoffentlich nie an nur einer Sache aufhält oder an einer Stelle verharrt, ihren eigene Weg geht und sich stetig entwickeln wird, so lange ihre Existenz gegeben ist. Dabei wird sicher nichts völlig Neues, keine neue Musikrichtung herauskommen. Das geht im Jahr 2009 eh schwer bzw. fast gar nicht oder? Aber es sollte halt irgendwo originelle Musik sein. Ich persönlich könnte nie in einer Band wie Motörhead (jetzt mal als krassestes Beispiel) glücklich werden, wo jedes Album und eine Vielzahl Songs gegeneinander austauschbar sind."

Sehr interessant! Das mit der Allgegen-wärtigkeit des Blues unterstreiche ich einfach mal stellvertretend für den Großteil der Doom Szene. Auch weil Black Sabbath aus dieser Richtung kamen und sich fast jeder irgendwie auf die Jungs bezieht. Hast du Hans und Richard beim ersten Treffen gleich in das Mysterium von SBE eingeweiht? Wann und wo war das denn überhaupt?

"Ja eben, auch alle Wino Bands haben ja mal richtig Blues! Richard und Thomas habe ich beide nach langem Suchen im Juni letztes Jahr getroffen - beide über das Internet. Wir haben dann einfach mal zusammen gejammt und es hat quasi endlich alles gepasst. Das war damals noch mit dem zweiten Gitarristen Michele. Aber leider hatte dieser dann nicht den richtigen Zugang zur Musik, da er eher aus dem Metal kommt. Aber Thomas und Richard sind geblieben. Hans wiederum war ein Kumpel von Richard und hat vorher fast nur Bass gespielt, wollte aber schon immer Gitarre zocken und hat auch gleich super mitgezogen. Das war so im Oktober 2008. Damals war schon klar, dass wir nach Amerika gehen werden und viel live spielen wollen. Die ersten Konzerte waren ja dann auch schon Anfang November. Nach jetzt gerade mal einem Jahr haben wir echt viel zusammen durch und werden immer mehr zu einer richtigen Band."

Apropos Amerika: mich interessiert, wie ihr euch auf die Tour gebeamt habt. Versteh mich bitte nicht falsch, aber es ist doch recht ungewöhnlich, bereits nach einer Demo auf der anderen Seite vom großen Teich spielen zu können. Welche Eindrücke hast du mitgebracht?

"Für die Tour haben Farflung zwei sehr geile Konzerte in Los Angeles und San Francisco organisiert und der große Rest danach kam über Redwood Curtain Booking. Die haben auch den Auslöser gegeben, als sie uns irgendwann im September 2008 gefragt haben, ob wir Bock hätten auf deren Festival zu spielen. Ansonsten, klar war das irgendwo schon eine recht "verrückte" Aktion, wenn man das so von einem ganz nüchternen Standpunkt sieht, aber wir hatten halt die Chance und haben sie genommen. Warum da noch auf ein Albumrelease warten, wenn die Zeit da ist? Wer weiß denn, wo wir in einem Jahr stehen? Dann hat der eine einen Fulltime-Job, der andere ein Kind oder was weiß ich - touren wird schlecht möglich. Wissen kann man das doch eh nie und dann ärgert man sich: "Hätten wir’s doch gemacht…".

Die Tour lief dann nach unseren Er-wartungen eigentlich echt super. Manche Leute kamen auch ohne uns zu kennen, quasi in erster Linie wegen dem Exotenbonus, haben danach das Shirt gekauft und waren begeistert. Wir haben auch schon den ersten Gig in Los Angeles als Headliner gespielt. In einem Club, wo wir in der Größe in Berlin wohl noch lange so was nicht hinkriegen werden, schon sehr über-wältigend und eine große Ehre, Farflung überhaupt dabei gehabt zu haben. Eindrücke habe ich jetzt so viel, wie wir Fotos von der Tour haben und mehr, also echt tausend Sachen. Damit könnten wir sicher ein komplettes Interview füllen - in Stichworten: Das beeindruckendste ist die Natur! Wir waren mehrmals in den Redwoods, sind auf dem Highway 1 direkt am Pazifik von San Francisco nach L.A. gefahren, Haben am Strand von Pismo Beach gechillt usw. L.A. ist z.B. eine unglaublich krasse Stadt, wir sind natürlich durch Beverly Hills gefahren und am Rockwalk gewesen und so weiter. Wir haben sehr viele neue Leute getroffen und Freundschaften geschlossen - mit Farflung, mit Darwin und Rachel von Treetarantula und den Jungs von Nudity, die uns fast während der gesamten Tour ihre Backline geliehen haben. Und wir haben auch einige echt unglaubliche Typen kennengelernt, wie Tony Reed von Stone Axe/ex-Mos Generator, der ein ganzes Haus voller Musikinstrumente besitzt (gut 200 qm voller krassestem Gelumpe, kein scheiß!). Damit aber nicht genug, der Typ hortet Laney Klipps, 70’s Sunns und Earth Amps wie andere "normale" Leute nicht mal Harley Benton kaufen könnten. Von seinen Fähigkeiten als Musiker brauch ich gar nicht anfangen. Alles in allem echt der krasseste Musikfreak vor dem Herrn. Aber gut, wir haben San Francisco, Los Angeles und Seattle beschallt. Allein das ist fast Eindruck genug."

Auf jeden Fall! Außerdem war die Tour eine gute Werbeaktion für euer anstehendes erstes Vollzeitalbum, das ja Anfang nächsten Jahres erscheinen soll. Wie weit seid ihr damit?

"Tja im Prinzip fertig, vielleicht müsste das noch jemand mastern. Ansonsten liegt die Scheibe inklusive Artwork fertig hier und bei einigen Labels auf dem Tisch. Heißt, wir suchen nach wie vor noch nach einem passenden Labeldeal!"

Dann kannst du ja schon einiges über das Album erzählen. Worauf dürfen wir uns denn gefasst machen?

"Auf 66 Minuten feinsten Heavy Psych, hätte ich jetzt gesagt. Wenn ich persönlich das Album resümieren sollte: naja, sind halt fünf Songs, die man von den Konzerten kennt plus einem Instrumental, bei dem ich alleine Akkustikgitarre spiele. Insgesamt ein recht rundes Werk. Die Songs hängen zwar vom jeweiligen Inhalt nicht direkt zusammen, also kein Konzeptalbum im klassischen Sinn, aber quasi ergänzt sich alles und läuft dann mit "Double Freedom" in nun 22 Minuten zum absoluten Höhepunkt, so ungefähr. Wir haben diesmal relativ viel mit Synthesizern gemacht, ein bisschen mehr Drone bei "Singata" und generell ist mehr Jam Feeling dabei, aber lasst euch einfach überraschen!

Leider wird ein Song bei der LP-Version wegfallen, weil der später auf eine Split soll, höchstwahrscheinlich zusammen mit Skywise. Aber das ist im Moment noch alles recht unklar. Klar ist nur, dass es eine LP und auch so eine Plastikscheibe geben muss!"

Also ich bin auf jeden Fall gespannt und die Konservierung des eigenen Schaffens für die Nachwelt ist immer eine lohnenswerte Sache! Wie sind denn die Stücke im Einzelnen entstanden?

"Also generell entstehen die meisten Songs durch ein Riff oder eine Melodie, auf die wir aufbauen und dann halt so im Schnitt acht bis zehn Minuten Riff an Riff und Melodie an Melodie reihen. Ganz selten hat mal einer einen Song komplett parat. Ich teile mir bislang quasi mit Richard das Songwriting, so ungefähr 70/30. Thomas und Hans geben ihre Inputs und dann entwickelt sich das bei Konzerten und Proben, vor allem bei den ganz langen Songs wie "Double Freedom" und "Center Of The Sun", über einen Zeitraum von so gut zwei bis vier Monaten bis der Song fertig ist. Kommt halt textlich auch ständig eine Änderung, weil ich ziemlicher Pedant bin und Standarttexte á la "the desert sun is rising high, i think tonight i´m gonna fly... yeah... alright" oder so vermeiden will, haha.

Aber einzeln auf die Songs einzugehen, auch wenn´s nur sechs sind, das würde mich wohl zwei Stunden an die Tastaur fesseln und vielleicht zur Schlafdroge 2009 werden. Sagen wir, so alle Songs haben eigene Charaktere und es steckt unver-meidlicherweise viel Persönlichkeit drin."

Das hört sich vielversprechend und definitiv nicht nach Einheitsbrei an. Kann man das Studio, in dem ihr aufgenommen habt weiterempfehlen?

"Das Studio ist jetzt gerade im Aufbau und im Wesentlichen die Idee von Richard, unserem Basser, der am SAE Institut Audioengineering studiert hat und damit allein theoretisch schon gut was auf dem Kasten hat. Das "Big Snuff"-Studio, von dem im Moment ein Drittel auch unser Proberaum ist, wird im Moment erweitert und soll ab Anfang nächsten Jahres richtig an den Start gehen. Sind im Endeffekt drei Leute, die das dann betreiben werden und vor allem Richard hat ganz klar die Affinität zu Stoner und Doom Mucke. Also ist es schon empfehlenswert für Leute, die sich in der Schiene bewegen. Aber auch darüber hinaus setzen sie sich, glaub ich, keine Limits, sondern haben einfach auch Lust auf Musik. Wir haben ja auch relativ viele Akkustikinstrumente aufgenommen und nebenbei mal ein paar Samplerspielereien gemacht, all so was..."

Gut zu wissen für alle, die nach einer Aufnahme-Location in Berlin suchen. An wen können sich interessierte Bands denn wenden?

"Am besten über Myspace unter www.myspace.com/bigsnuffstudio gucken. Ich denke, die Jungs sind auch preislich sehr erschwinglich."

SBE geht ja ab Ende November auf eine kleine Deutschland-Tour. Wo und mit wel-chen weiteren Bands kann man euch denn dann live erleben?

"Wir haben quasi sieben Dates, alle in Ostdeutschland, mit Ira de Dios, Pater Nembrot aus Italien, mit denen wir im Oktober schon durch deren Gefilde getourt sind und dann auch Tanker aus Potsdam, bei denen der ehemalige Terraplane Drummer Andreas Herbst spielt. Ich bin besonders auf Halle gespannt, auch weil wir da ja mit Terraplane schon zweimal waren und Halberstadt, weil’s die alte Heimat ist. In Zerbst spielen wir noch mit Rings Of Saturn, die ich über Myspace kennengelernt und spontan zu dem Gig eingeladen hab. Sind alle eher so im Space oder Psychedelic Bereich zu Hause. Pater Nembrot machen ja auch schön Oldschool Zeug und wir verstehen uns echt super mit denen. Die konkreten Dates kann man unserem Myspace oder der Website entnehmen."

Na dann werde ich auf jeden Fall auch nach Halle/Saale in die Rockstation pilgern und mir einen Live-Eindruck von euch ver-schaffen. Danke, dass du dir die Zeit für das Interview genommen und meine Fragen soausführlich beantwortet hast.

Switchblade (Interview)

The following interview with Tim of SWITCHBLADE is the longest I have ever done so far. Due to the lack of cash for just making a trip to Stockholm/Sweden or at least making a call we quickly decided to talk via mail. After two weeks of daily correspondence I got kind of used to reading Tim’s answers while sipping at my morning coffee, the next time will be very hard for me. But enough of lamantation, here’s the interview:

Tim, you recently released the fifth album with your band SWITCHBLADE and drive Trust No One Recordings in addition. You seem to be kind of Doom-dependent workaholic?

"Yeah, we just released our fifth album on my own label. We started Switchblade 11 years ago and the label was started about 14 years ago. Both the band and the label is something I do in my (kind of limited) spare time. I work fulltime at a record distribution company/record store in Stockholm called Sound Pollution, who also distributes my releases. So yeah, almost all my time awake has to do with music in some way. But I do try to find some time for my wife and kids as well of course."

I thought your label was founded later just to distribute the band's releases. Why did SWITCHBLADE see the light of day then, wasn't there enough music existing around you?

"The label was founded before as a way to release my earlier band of no importance. When that band broke up I really had an urge to start a new band to make music that I really wanted to hear myself that I think was missing. I'm not saying that we have ever strived to be very "different" or anything. We just make music that we can listen to ourselves and really enjoy. It might sound stupid but it’s all an egoist thing for us."

Not at all! If you wouldn't like your own stuff, who should then. What did you miss about music in 1998, the year SWITCHBLADE was founded?

"Well, coming from a punk/hardcore background I think that I missed something a little bit different than the standard generic hardcore music. I'm not saying that we created something "new" in any way, it was just that I wanted something that sounded new to me. Explore new ground I guess."

This explains the raw and brutal punk/hardcore, almost grinding sound of your early releases, the first EP, the 10'' and the Split w/Cult Of Luna. But the music already had kind of Experimental/Post Rock hints I would say. The songs "Slowing Down" and Dying" from your first full-length album in 2000 were slowed down very much then. The 2001 and 2003 albums were straight post rocking stuff. The 2006 release marks another turning point for the sound of SWITCHBLADE, distributing just two overlong titles playing minimalist extreme doom in the vein of the mighty Khanate. Do you agree with this evolutionary description?

"Yes, I fully agree. Even though the music has evolved and changed throughout the years, there’s certainly a red thread running thru all of the records from the very start. And the evolution is also a clear sign that we have never set out to make a certain type of music and stick to that, but to keep evolving and finding new ways to keep the music interesting for ourselves and to play what we feel is "us" for the moment."

I understand, in my opinion your new album marks the momentary climax of a permanent rising curve. All three songs are a symbiosis of Doom, Drone and Post Rock core attributes, which you max out to the very pain barrier - minimalist drums, droning riff-walls, painful distortions, agonizing screams and lots of empty space. It's kind of experimental but powerful martyrdom. What could be the next step in this extreme evolution?

"It’s hard for me to predict where the next material will take us. But as it is right now, I think that we have found something that feels really good to us but as I said before, over time you get new type of ideas and take things in new directions so only time can tell where we’ll end up when a future recording is done. The plan though is to start writing material for a split 12" with our brethren in Kongh."

The actual album was recorded in Gröndal and Version studios. Why two places?

"Because Gröndal is a very expensive studio so we could only afford to spend 3 days in Gröndal for the basic tracking. Then we moved on to a small and very affordable studio called Version Studio where we recorded some more guitar overdubs and the vocals. The three days in the Version Studio cost us about as much as 1 hour in Gröndal costs."

The result is worth all money you invested. I think that it is hard work to record an album in a short time. Hope you had some fun with your band mates too. How can one imagine the recordings of a SWITCHBLADE release?

"Thank you. Yeah, we really wanted to get the best possible audio result this time to really bring out all the subtle details in our music. Especially in the more atmospheric and quiet parts. Bands often put all their energy on getting the heavier parts as thick and heavy as possible but forget to make the quiet parts stand out as well. We are always very prepared when entering the studio and we record the basic tracks live as I think every band should do. On the 2006 album we hardly did any guitar dubs at all, but this time we did. It’s very hard with getting the timing right on the very slow parts when recording overdubs, and we don’t want to use a click track since the music needs to "breathe" and change in tempo. We filmed the basic tracking sessions from two angles and then synchronized that in Pro-Tools. So Johan and Anders could watch ourselves play on a monitor while recording guitar overdubs and vocals. Very hi-tech, I know."

Why not use the technical possibilities; it depends on the result you aim at. Most traditional Doom bands strictly record with analogue equipment using tube amps to get the old school fuzzy guitar sound of the 70's. I love this very much too. SWITCHBLADE stands on the other end, kind of progressive in a very minimalist way. What some people miss about your actual stuff are the song structures. In my opinion those guys don't understand your sound at all. There are no melodies and lyrics to sing along, it has more to do with extreme arrangements, experimental sounds and meditation, right?

"Exactly, but we do use Orange and Sunn tube amps without distortion pedals to get the sound we want. We do record live as a band. And we used lots of old microphones that Gröndal are kind of famous for. But instead of recording straight to 2" tape (like we did on the 2006 album) we used a modern recording device, namely a computer. So I would still say that we have more of an old school way of thinking when recording. And I’m pretty proud to say that we have not edited the drums in the computer except for one (!) drum hit.

Yeah, I personally think that our songs have very strict arrangements and nothing is left "open". Every hit and tone is planned carefully. Our songs are not built in the same way as 3 min radio hit songs. We work with moods and atmospheres and try to look beyond the usual "Verse, chorus, verse, bridge, chorus" type arrangements. Don’t get me wrong, I do love a lot of music that’s arranged that way as well, but it’s not for SWITCHBLADE."

I can't imagine how to compose and memorize those song monsters. How do you usually write and rehearse the songs?

"Well, the song structures are really not that complex when you break them down but it might sound complex as a whole. We usually bring a couple of riffs and ideas to band practice and play that over and over and make small changes and try to feel where the song should go from there."

I guess there is a very private and energy laden feeling when a song is growing in the practice room. What is the major difference to a live show like your gig at the Low Frequency Assault in Nuremburg last year, which I really enjoyed?

"I don’t think the difference between a band rehearsal and a live show is that big actually. Or at least we try to re-create the feeling from the practice room when we’re on stage as well. As you might have noticed, we’re not a band that interacts very much with the audience at live shows. We just focus on the music and the connection between the three of us."

Right before the new album's release you did another small club tour. Which one did you enjoy most, did you already get any reactions on the new songs?

"Yes, we did a short tour together with Kongh. The tour was good even though the turnout was not that good at the shows. But we had good shows personally and that’s what is important in the end for us. It doesn’t really matter if it’s 20 people or 200 people. I think that the latest tour was better for us feeling-wise because we played the new album more or less from the beginning to the end every night. The reviews of the new album have been really good so far. And it seems like people really enjoyed the shows on tour so..."

...you could sell many copies of the actual album after the shows hopefully. How about Kodiak from Germany with whom you played some dates of the tour, did you have the time to watch and enjoy them yourself?

"There wasn't that many people at the shows so the sales were not that high. But I'm not complaining. Yeah, we enjoyed having Kodiak on board for two shows. They played quite a lot of new material so it took me some time to get into it but they were good, and loud."

To all of you readers out there: Support SWITCHBLADE and buy there new album, it's really worth your hard earned cash! Now a couple of closing questions to be answered in short: Tim, when is your 12'' split with Kongh to expect?

"Thanks man. We are really slow when it comes to writing so don’t hold your breath. My guess is the spring 2010 maybe."

What is your favourite album actually?

"That’s a tough question. I don’t think I’ve heard a "10 out of 10" kind of album in quite a while but in the last few days I have really been enjoying the Eagle Twin album quite a lot."

What is in your opinion the most important release of Doom history?

"Oh man, that’s an even harder question. I think there has been a bunch of important albums in all sub-genres of Doom at different points in time so it’s hard to pinpoint just 1 album. But I don't think things would look and sound the same without the first Black Sabbath album."

Who's your personal hero in music business?

"No heroes really. I guess the "no gods - no masters" saying has stuck with me but of course there's alot of people in the music "business" that I respect both as musicians, persons and recordlabel-runners. No one mentioned - no one forgotten…"

What do you think about vegans?

"I think veganism is good. I was a vegan myself for a number of years. But as with a lot of other things some people become fanatic and go to extremes. And take action like burning meat-trucks etc. I do not approve of things like that."

...about the world financial crises?

"I don't really have an answer to that but I think that a lot of the crisis is in people’s mind."

…about SWITCHBLADE?

"I think that it’s something very important in my life as it has been for the last 11 years and will hopefully continue to be."

What are your last words, at least for this interview?

"Thank you for your support and interest in SWITCHBLADE. Keep up the good work and hope to see you soon!"

Christian "Chritus" Linderson of Lord Vicar (Interview)

Hey Christian, you are right back in Sweden from the tour with your actual baby Lord Vicar supporting The Gates Of Slumber. How did things flow?

"Ha! Ha! Its more Peters baby than mine, to be honest...Im more like a bonus parent as they might say in Sweden. but thank You still the same.But yeah, we had a great time, and getting along with them guys was no problem. Most of us knew them since before, anyway, and I found them being very cool people. A couple of years ago, I understand that TGoS/Reverend Bizarre and Centurions Ghost did quite a long tour together, and I truly enjoyed listening to their memories."

But I guess you had a couple of stories to tell as well, but to this we will come later here. You had kind of busy year with Lord Vicar: the release of the debut album in November via Church Within Records last year, then gone on several tours including the Dawn Of Doom Festival in Switzerland, the Doom Shall Rise and Hell's Pleasure OA in Germany, now the shows with TGOS. How did you experience the last year, kept your level of fitness and managed family business alongside? You're no kitten anymore, ha ha!

"Well, THANK YOU for pointing that out! However, I do not FEEL old, just BITTER! Ha, ha! But seriously now, as You say - it has been quite an eventful year in that sense, yes. And looking back at it now...well, time seems to fly these days, in my opinion. And time in between gigs and tours is still just the same of that old everyday bullshit with work and stuff, like it always has been, you know? To try to answer that question...Oh, I dunno. I’m in construction by profession, so having a somewhat physical job is nothing new to me, really. A working class hero is something to be! Furthermore, I’m not the only member with a kid in this band. We all have to adjust and make schematics work for us. For me personally, the financial part can be a burden most times, though. I mean, Im not in this to make the big bucks and that will more than likely never happen anyway. But as with most other people I have a rent and bills to pay. I lose income everyday when not working and to make ends meet financially can be a real bitch at times. But I love doing this and I am doing it for my own mental well being, you know? I would be dying vast inside if I wasn’t!"

That's just the way it is. But I think there are many outside, including me, who really appreciate you w/Lord Vicar and other underground bands making music in their kind of rare spare time and pleasing us with remarkable Doom stuff.

"I think there’s some kind of symbiosis going on there. Obviously if nobody cared about the band we wouldn’t be touring. And for me that is the payment for it all - when people who come to see us get into it and rock out. You can’t beat that feeling, really. As You mentioned here earlier, I’m no kitten anymore and I’ve been doing this for quite a while now. It’s such a great feeling when people come up and tell me how much the music I’ve been involved in means to them.Naturally I have my own heroes as well, so I know where they come from so to speak."

As everybody should know Lord Vicar is originated in Finland, but you are a citizen of Sweden. How do you manage rehearsing and meeting over those distances?

"...Careful planning and a 12-hour ferry ride! Good thing it doesn’t happen that often, though. You see, there’s like absolutely nothing to do on those trips save from drinking and I try hard not to every time, with minor success I should add. Flying only takes an hour or two, so I should probably look into that as an option in future. It’s much easier on the liver if nothing else!"

So you should do, and your liver arrives some hours later, who cares. Maybe you tell us about the future plans with Lord Vicar, the 2nd album, upcoming tours etc.

"In December we will rehearse some new songs for possible single split releases. In February we will play at the Hammer Of Doom III Festival in Würzburg, and I guess a couple of gigs to coincide with that event. Can’t tell You where or when though since they aren´t confirmed just yet. Keep an eye open for advertisements, folks! And after that we start rehearsals for the next album I reckon, entitled 'Signs Of Osiris'."

Thanks a lot for this awesome news. Then we will definitely see again at Hammer Of Doom III Festival where you will share the stage with the mighty Saint Vitus! By the way, it's somewhat like a family meeting. Please remember the time you joined Saint Vitus, how did this happen?

"Well, for me it was a fucking dream come true, and I will be the first one to admit it. So, in what must have been about halfway through the recording of the second Count Raven album, "Destruction Of The Void", I read somewhere that Wino had left the band. I had by then gotten to know Messiah Marcolin from Candlemass through Matz Ekstroem, and Messiah and myself were the biggest fans of Saint Vitus in Sweden back then, as far as I know anyway. Our record company then asked me to contact him and ask him if he would be interested in going over there to join them, as he wasn´t in Candlemass anymore. But he already had other plans, so they asked me to go instead. I was not comfortable with the situation in Count Raven at this time, and I was actually about to leave them anyway in favour of PENANCE, who I had some correspondence with there for a while. It never happened, as I was too flattered and tempted by the chance to join one of my absolute favourite bands at the time, so I just went for it...Imagine that! I remember our very first song during rehearsal was "Prayer For The (M)asses", and how could I EVER forget?! Time stood still and I truly F**KING LOVED every second of it! And so I ended up being with them for some three and a half years from then on. It was a true adventure, I learnt a great deal from them guys and that whole period of my life gave me a lot of fun memories. It will be great to check them out in February, and I am also very much looking forward to meet Mark again. When LORD VICAR played the DOOM SHALL RISE festival earlier this year, Wino came to our backstage to say hello. It was great to see him and he has always been cool to me."

But you're definitely a part of their history. Can you still stand listening to your vocal part on "Children Of Doom" (1992), as it sounds kind of different compared to your usual style of singing?

"I never listen to it. As it was, Dave would not have me singing the way I did naturally, because of the obvious Ozzy-comparison I reckon, and it lead me to become really distant to myself and uncomfortably insecure in general. It puzzles me as he obviously knew how I sounded like already, you know? But this is all history now, and I rarely think of it these days, except while given the question during interviews! Ha! ha! In all fairness, I have to say I have moved on a long time ago and I have no problems with him personally today. Sheesh, all this happened when? Some 20 years ago now! And throughout the years I have had a lot of people telling me that they really like it and that it is truly underrated in their opinion, which is fine by me, you know, I’m just not objective enough to feel the same. And for hardcore Vitus fans who dislikes it I reckon it´s very easy to point at the vocals as the main reason why it sounds the way it does. Of course, I’m nothing but a sitting duck in that aspect. But from what I can recall of the production itself it’s very different from "Die Healing", for example, which is more what I was after in the first place. But it was never up to me and it is what it is."

...And it will always be! At what point did you generally develop your wish and ability to sing, and I don't speak of squeaking "Da, da, da..." while having a shower, but of those traditional Metal/Doom style vocals you're kind of famous for?

"Uh, I don’t know really. It’s just the way it comes out. I was in a couple of other local bands before joining STORMWARNING (who became COUNT RAVEN later on) in mid 80´s, and I don’t think I adjusted or altered my style all that much from previous bands. It was more a case of the music becoming much heavier and slower. But initially deciding upon thinking that vocals might be the thing for me, I guess could be narrowed down to two things; first off, I could never learn how to play an instrument. I tried to learn how to play the guitar there for a while, with no success at all...and secondly, it’s a lot cheaper! Ha! No, it was like this: I used to hang out with an older cousin of mine when I was in my younger teens. His closest friends were playing in a local band called JONAH QUIZZ, and he brought me with him to their rehearsals sometimes. They were really great, very professional. Musically they were a crossing between early Saxon (Denim And Leather - era) and Judas Priest (Screaming...) and their singer sang in Swedish then, later on changing to English as well. Anyway, he became an instant God of mine as I was totally blown away by his voice and presence. I totally worshipped him, and I still do, as he is no doubt the actual real reason why I felt the call of duty in the first place. His name is Johan Längqvist, and he later on ended up singing on the first Candlemass album. He possesses the greatest Metal voice ever coming out of this country, in my opinion, simply brilliant."

Of course, I dig his voice as well. "Epicus Doomicus Metallicus" is still one of the biggest releases in Doom history, mainly "Solitude" is such an amazing song causing goose bumps when listening. But I would for god's sake never wish to harm any people with my awful singing voice - it's quite bad, but loud at least! If you had the job to introduce any newcomer to your career, which album of every band having been involved would you recommend and why?

"COUNT RAVEN - "High On Infinity". When I heard it the first time i actually regretted leaving them there for a minute. The overall sound and the songs on there are really good. A fantastic album.

SAINT VITUS - "Mournful Cries". Again, for the sound and the songs on there. Looking Glass, Shooting Gallery, Dragontime...awh, man! The solos in that song, where they are taking turns like that is just pure genius!

TERRA FIRMA - Both the self titled first one and "Harms Way". Sorry, this is not what You wanted but I could not possibly choose just one of them! I love them both just as much. That band and the music we created together marked such a clear turning point in my life. And had You asked me of an era instead of one from each band I’ve been involved in, I would have said this band.

LORD VICAR - "Fear No Pain". Obviously I’m proud of it and very happy I was asked to participate in this constellation. Gotta love the guys involved, and how much more Doom than this can it get? Feel free to ask me again when next album is recorded! Ha! ha!"

As I know you've several times been trying to and now run another band besides LORD VICAR. This one is called WEEKEND BEAST! Who is it metaphorically and in person?

"The idea for this band came up some time after Terra Firma was no more. Since becoming a parent grants one certain responsibilities, party habits are most often restricted to weekends. Hence the name. I confess my own situation at the time being the sole source for coming up with this phenomenon, as thinking along those lines before my son arrived was unheard of in my book. Ideas for line-up has varied now for the past two years, and only just a few months ago we finally managed to get hold of personal to fill in the spots. Its me on vocals (duh!), Nicky Beast (guit), Kenta Beast (dr) and Brynemo the Bjaerv on bass. Some Death Metal fans might now Brynemo from a band called INQUISITOR, where he played most instruments himself. Musically, as much as I don´t like to label shit but I guess it is unavoidable in print in order to give You an idea of what it sounds like, the general material so far falls under the Stoner/Groove monicker. When You hear it the comparison to Terra Firma will be unavoidable, but this was never even the plan in the first place. It could easily have been a pure Doom metal band had people who I first had in mind joined. In retrospect, I’m kinda glad they didn’t, because the feeling we get during rehearsals is fucking out of this world! I am very, very happy with what we do. Pure straightforward relentless sinister stuff. We have a song called "Heimdallr" which I’d say sums up the whole general feeling of the band and music. So maybe we should just release it on a one-sided 7"inch and call it a day! Ha! ha! Seriously, plans are to record the album sometime next year and it’s entitled "Skooma Und Panzerwagen". Run while You can!"

So, just to correct my introducing question, the WEEKEND BEAST is your real baby as it was given birth by you. "Skooma Und Panzerwagen" is quite a strange album title. How do those things come together, kind of psychoactive warfare?

"Yeah, guess you can say that. "Skooma" Is taken from the Fantasy RPG "Morrowind", whom both Nicky and I are huge fans of. In the game there is an illegal potion by that name, with drug like effects. We just added "...Und Panzerwagen" because it’s cool, and very Heavy Metal."

Yes indeed! But some guys may be bothered by this, kind of provocative as well, isn't it?

"Why? Because it involves a fictional illegal drug option and tanks are mentioned in German? Well, I wouldn’t be surprised....Sheesh, it’s just Stoner!"

Obviously, I just wanted to know! Who's actually the main song writer in WEEKEND BEAST?

"We have this riffing machine on guitar named Nicky, you see. He just keeps spitting out good stuff at rehearsals and we all elaborate around that. If there is one specific songwriter in the band, I suppose he is the man worthy the title. He just makes the rest of us go off in a variety of musical fireworks! We have so much fun at rehearsals, and the quantity of beer might contribute aswell. It´s a very nice genuine and laidback feeling when we meet. I am very happy with the way things are developing. And I have come up with some of my best vocal melodies as of yet, in my own humble opinion.""

Sounds promising so far, guess there will run two fine releases over us next year, of LORD VICAR and WEEKEND BEAST! Let's now play this childish game: You had been seperated on that lonesome isle and could take just three things of every of the following categories with you! Which albums are worth it?

"I guess ROBIN TROWER - "Bridge Of Sighs", THE MARS VOLTA - "De-Loused In The Comatorium", KATE BUSH - "Hounds Of Love"."

I wouldn`t have thought, but you have to survive! Which three persons would you like to have around you to sweeten the isolation?

"Kate Bush, Tori Amos and whoever’s on page three in The Sun tomorrow. They still have that, by the way! If not, the woman known as The Perverted Old Goatess on Myspace. And as much as I love him I suppose I should’ve said my son here, but that would not be fair - he´d have nowhere to go when his parent rebellion phase comes!"

That's true, sustaining puberty on that isle would be kind of dreadful. Since there would come the time you have to share Kate, Tori or the Goatess as well, ha ha, to say nothing of unavoidable turf wars! Which three tools do you definitely need there?

"I Know, Huh? And He Looks Better Than Me Already! ...A hammer, A saw, and a tire wrench!"

The saw I understand, but a hammer and that tire wrench?

"…to open the coconuts. The tire wrench just to figure out how it may be useful."

Maybe you find some lost screws & nuts for constructing an amphibian vehicle or anything else to get off that isle, as a couple of men, including the Doom community, would miss you.
